Is a Hobbiton and Glow Worm Tour Worth It?

An honest read on the Hobbiton and Waitomo day trip: who it suits, what the long day costs you, what guests say, and when driving yourself is better.

Updated October 2026

For a first visit to the North Island without a car, yes: the day trip is the simplest way to see two of its best-known sights, and the reviews are unusually consistent. It is a long day, 11 to 13 hours, mostly in a vehicle. For someone with a car and a few days, doing it at your own pace is cheaper and less tiring.

What guests say

The cheapest tour here has 3,025 reviews at 4.9, which is a large sample. One guest from the United States wrote that Hobbiton “was very good, loved it. Even if you haven’t seen the movies or read the books, I think you will be intrigued,” and that the glowworm caves “were fascinating, unfortunately you can’t take pictures.” Another said that sitting “in complete darkness and silence while looking up at what resembles a starry sky was a truly unique experience.” On Cheeky Kiwi Travel’s tour, rated 4.9 from 774, guests mostly name their guide.

Do you need to have seen the films?

No, though fans get more from Hobbiton. The set is a landscaped village of hobbit holes, gardens and a working mill on a sheep farm, and the guides explain how it was built and filmed. The glowworm caves need no background at all; they are the half of the day that non-fans tend to remember.

What the day costs you

Time, mainly. About five and a half hours of the day are driving, and the tours run in all weather. The days start early and finish in the evening. Several listings say the day is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments, one excludes children under four, and the Waitomo caves have stairs. Photography is not allowed inside the caves.

When driving yourself is better

With a car, book a Hobbiton slot and a Waitomo cave ticket separately and split the drive with a night in the Waikato or in Rotorua. You lose the commentary and the lunch, and gain time at each site. If you are going to Rotorua anyway, a one-way tour gives you the sights and the transfer in one: see the Rotorua guide.
