Why one way makes sense from Rotorua
Rotorua is close to Hobbiton, about an hour, but Waitomo lies on the far side of the Waikato, so a return day from Rotorua covers much the same road as one from Auckland. Most visitors travel between the two cities anyway. A one-way tour turns that transfer into the sightseeing day, and you arrive at your next hotel in the evening.

FlexiToursNZ offers four start-and-finish combinations, and its listing says it is essential to choose the right one when booking or it may not be able to return you where you want. The vehicles carry fewer seats than standard, 9 or 12 people. One guest who rode from Rotorua to Auckland called the transfer “perfect for combining the two visits and the drop-off in AUK without wasting any time”.
Bush and Beach collects from selected Rotorua accommodation at 8:00am and drops you at inner-city Auckland accommodation. Its listing includes the buffet lunch, a Green Dragon drink and a Hobbiton souvenir voucher, and warns of about 75 stairs in the Waitomo caves.
Cheeky Kiwi Travel runs Auckland to Rotorua: Waitomo first, then Hobbiton, then a short drive around Rotorua before you leave the group. The luggage allowance is one large and one small bag each.
Two days instead
FlexiToursNZ also sells a two-day tour from Auckland, from about $955, with a night in Rotorua, Te Puia’s geysers, a Mitai cultural evening with dinner and the Waitomo caves on the second day. It returns to Auckland. Solo travellers who want their own room book two fares.
