Can You Visit Hobbiton Without a Tour?

No: the Hobbiton Movie Set is on private farmland and only open on guided tours. How to visit independently from The Shire's Rest, and when a day trip makes more sense.

Updated October 2026

No: the Hobbiton Movie Set can only be seen on a guided tour. The official site says it plainly, “Hobbiton Movie Set is only accessible via guided tour”, because the set sits on the Alexander family’s private farm near Matamata. What you can do without an organised day trip is drive there yourself and join one of the attraction’s own tours.

Visiting independently

The main departure point is The Shire’s Rest, at 501 Buckland Road, Matamata, where you park and board the coach to the set. The Signature Tour takes 2.5 hours there and back, including that coach. A second departure leaves once a day from the Matamata Information Centre in the town; the official FAQ lists it at 3.5 hours.

You book a timed slot in advance on the official site. The adult ticket is NZ$130 and the price is fixed for departures until 31 March 2028. Youth tickets, ages 11 to 17, are NZ$65, a family pass for two adults and two youths is NZ$332, and children 10 and under go free but still need a booked ticket with a paying adult.

What the tour includes

The guided walk goes past the hobbit holes of the 12-acre set, the Mill and the Party Tree, and into a furnished hobbit home on Bagshot Row. It ends at The Green Dragon Inn, where the ticket includes one drink from the Hobbiton Southfarthing range. You can take photos throughout. What you cannot do is leave the group to explore on your own.

Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.

With a car and a night in the Waikato, the independent route is cheaper and slower. Without a car, the day trip is the practical answer: it is the only way to reach both sites in a day without driving.

Before you go

Arrive at The Shire’s Rest a little before your booked slot. The set is outdoors and the tour runs in rain. Operators’ listings mention maintenance and building work on the set this year, so part of it may be screened off.
